The Cazadero Community Services District was created in 1963, when residents of the remote, redwood canyon sought a formal local agency to coordinate essential services and speak with one voice to the county. Organized under California’s Community Services District law, its formation reflected a grassroots push for reliable fire protection, basic community facilities, and a structure for planning and funding local needs. Early leaders established the District’s governance and service boundaries and set the volunteer-driven tone that still defines Cazadero’s civic life. That 1963 decision laid the groundwork for decades of community stewardship—providing a legal and financial framework that allowed a small town to protect itself, maintain shared spaces, and shape its own future.
